What a pergola is
A pergola is an outdoor structure with posts, beams and an open slatted top. Unlike a solid patio cover, it is not meant to keep out rain. Its job is to frame a space, add some shade and give climbing plants, lights or curtains something to hang from.

Materials
- Wood: the classic look, fully customizable, but needs regular sealing and staining.
- Aluminum: wood-look or modern finishes with almost no maintenance. A strong choice near pools and sprinklers.
- Louvered: adjustable blades on top let you go from open sky to full shade, and some close tight enough to shed rain.
- Vinyl: a clean white look with low upkeep, common in more traditional designs.
Attached or freestanding
An attached pergola extends straight off the house, a natural fit for a back patio. A freestanding pergola can go anywhere: over a pool deck, a spa, an outdoor kitchen or a garden seating area. Freestanding designs need posts and footings on all sides, which affects cost and layout.

Getting more shade
A standard pergola gives partial shade. To get more, you can tighten the spacing of the top slats, add a shade fabric or retractable canopy, train vines over the top or choose a louvered system. If shade is the main goal, compare a lattice or solid patio cover too.
